I am sooooo excited to be writing this post! A Couple weeks ago Ana White put out a call, looking for DIYers to collaborate with. I rushed over and applied, thinking there was no way I would get picked. BUT I DID!!! We chose to make these super awesome veggie bins. They were a very easy build, I had them done in a day. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
Dont ya love em?? I sure do. I had veggie bins built into my kitchen island when I designed my house. So instead of using them for veggies, I am using mine for yarn, and all of my knitting and crocheting stuff. I desperately needed a place for all my yarny junk, and these work perfect! I think I am actually going to go pick up a couple small hooks, and drill them into the side of the cabinet. That way I can also hang up my knitting looms that wont fit inside.
For the finish I used 1 coat of Minwax classic grey and one coat of finishing wax. The knobs I LOVE. I bought them from Winners of all places months ago. I have been saving them for the right project. I still have a bunch left, but I think they work great for this.
A couple tips for your project:
Buy yourself 3 sets of magnetic clasps to hold the doors shut. They are a must.
When you are attaching the top clasp, take a small piece of 1×2 and affix it right behind the top trim piece, attach your clasp to that. Otherwise, there is really no where to put it.
If you are using single knobs like I did, make sure you off set your hardware for your clasps. Otherwise you are going to be drilling your knob holes right through the metal base plate for the clasps… that wont work
Dont be afraid to move your cabinet around. I flipped mine upside down to get the clasps on. Made it a lot easier.
Have fun, and be safe. I think this is a great project for a beginner. It was very simple. Keep checking for square and youre all good.
