Fun fact about me: I hate, no that’s not strong enough of a word. I DETEST planning meals. Like I would rather go to the dentist than sit and plan out what my family is going to eat. Every 2 weeks on payday I sit and I make a list of everything we are going to eat for the next 2 weeks. I always ask the hub and the kids, hey guys what do you want to eat for dinners? and I ALWAYS get the same answer back. *shrug of shoulders* mumbly barely coherent and totally uninterested: I don’t know. OR once in a rare while the hub will give me an answer and whatever the meal he suggests is, it consists of 10 courses that would each take me a month to prepare and half of our life savings to buy because he doesnt understand how much food costs or how long it takes to make certain meals. Then I look at him like hes flippin nuts and restrain myself from stabbing him with the pen im holding. and yup, I do this every 2 weeks. FUN!
So when I saw that Relish.com was looking for people to review their meal planning site, I emailed them right away and said PICK ME! For the love of everything good in this world, PLEASE. PICK. ME. and they did!
So what is Relish? It is a meal planning site that will save you time and money (and your husband from any unfortunate pen stabbing incidents) The Relish philosophy: A weekly menu planner aimed to help busy families put wonderful meals on the table every night. No sloppy casseroles or expensive kitchen blunders. Instead look for everyday food…with a gourmet twist.
So first you become a member of the Relish community. The subscription is $7 or as low as $5 with a yearly subscription. Each Thursday morning you will receive an email from them to tell you that the new menu is up on the site. Log in and choose your menus. You can choose from a selection of delicious recipes that you can make in 30 minutes or less. Choose kid-friendly, quick, simple-gourmet, vegetarian, brunch and lunch options. The site is really easy to use. You can even go back and find past recipes and when you find something your family really likes, you can save it as a favorite to use again. You can scale your recipes to suit your families size, 2-4-6-8 people. The recipes are all “normal” food, nothing that calls for the rare leaf of the unicorn flower found only on the top of some crazy mountain in some far away land. Its all stuff you will either already have around or will be easily found in your supermarket. The whole interface is basically drag and drop. So you just find recipes you want to try and drag them over to your list. Once you are done you can go to your grocery list and everything you need to buy to make your meals is there, if you already have some of the items you just uncheck them. You can also add onto your list, if you need other things like toilet paper ect. And you can email or print your list and recipe to use later.
This site is really great. Menu planning takes time. But it is SO much worse without any help. You end up sitting there either racking your brain for ideas, or scouring the web to find recipes. Now its all in one place and its easy to use. Not only will it save you time, but it will surely save you money. If you have ever gotten into the habit of shopping every day or even every other day, you know how fast it adds up. When you shop for a weeks worth of items at a time it will save you a ton!
